Billy Brookshire, Austin Music

About the Program:

What is the Austin Sound? It’s roughly a blend of country, folk, rock, gospel & blues. In the beginning, all music in Austin was live & the music was a hearty blend of: religious hymns, gospel spirituals, beer-hall tunes, folk songs, cowboy ballads & more. It is enriched by diverse influences: from tribal ceremony to the varied rhythms of the first settlers. Subsequent pilgrims added to the savory mix. The music ignores ethnic lines & draws inspiration from many cultures.

In our past 2 Austin Sound segments, we’ve explored the origins and development of the Sound, the impact of the Armadillo World Headquarters and the arrival of the troubadors, songwriters, and headliners who settled in Austin in the 70s and contributed to the richness of the Austin Sound and the growth of the Austin Music Scene. In this segment, we’ll explore blues and rock influences as well as entertainers and venues (especially those in the 80s) that have added vital elements to the continually evolving Austin Sound. Come join us.
