How Foundation Communities is Taking on the Affordability Problem in Austin
Walter Moreau, executive director at Foundation Communities, works to to create affordable housing where families succeed.
Established in 1990, Foundation Communities is a local, homegrown nonprofit. It provides affordable, attractive homes and free on-site support services for thousands of families with kids, as well as veterans, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Foundation Communities offers an innovative, proven model that empowers our residents and neighbors to achieve educational success, financial stability, and healthier lifestyles. The organization owns and operates 22 communities all over Austin and in North Texas.
About our speaker
During his 25 year career, Walter has secured more than $200 million in subsidy financing to create more than 3,500 units of service-enriched, nonprofit-owned affordable housing. Foundation Communities operates 10 onsite learning centers, five supportive housing communities for the homeless, and is the largest private producer of solar power in Central Texas.
Foundation Communities provided short and long term housing to over 400 evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. Walter led Foundation Communities to develop the Community Tax Centers and Insure Central Texas, which serve over 25,000 families each year.
Moreau received the JAJ Fannie Mae Fellowship in 2007, and the Texas Houser Award in 2004. He holds a Masters Degree in Public Affairs from the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs (1994).
