How Capital City Innovation could change Austin's future

Austin’s Innovation District is where creative individuals come to access the special sauce in Austin. For example, the University of Texas has launched its new Dell Medical School to disrupt healthcare and create a better system of health for all by blending with Austin’s legacy of technology innovation and social enterprise. The Innovation District opens doors and provides the place to take advantage of the enviable academic, creative, and entrepreneurial ecosystem that makes Austin’s brand a worldwide platform for innovation.

Capital City Innovation is the non-profit organization formed by University of Texas at Austin, Seton, and Central Health to create a vision, and to coordinate stakeholders in Austin’s Innovation District. Our speaker, Chris Laing, will talk about the project and where it could lead.

About our speaker

As executive director of Capital City Innovation, Chris leads an organization that is coordinating the stakeholders of the innovation district emerging around Austin’s new health complex. Anchored by the new collaboration among University of Texas at Austin’s Dell Medical School, Seton Healthcare, and Central Health, and supported by the Downtown Austin Alliance, Opportunity Austin, and community stakeholders, Austin’s innovation district is committed to inclusive place-making and healthy community.

Previously, Chris was a member of the senior management team of Philadelphia’s University City Science Center, the country’s oldest and largest urban innovation hub, where he had specific oversight of commercialization programs, startup investment, and business incubation/acceleration.

Prior to joining the Science Center, Chris worked for a number of biomedical start-up companies, ran a research program at the University of Pennsylvania, and was a practicing companion animal veterinarian in the United Kingdom.
