Helping New Neighbors Feel Welcome

Join us as we learn about Refugee Services of Texas, the largest resettlement agency in Texas and how to build community, compassion and trust with welcoming our new neighbors to Austin. Our clients are refugees, asylum seekers, survivors of trafficking and our work includes the reception of clients, provision of basic necessities (including housing, food, and clothing), case management, job placement, language classes, cultural orientation, mentors, mental health services, and legal services. We'll cover the services provided, the many realities of the resettlement and asylum processes and all the ways folks can get involved through volunteering, donating, advocating and amplifying stories!

About our speaker:

Elena Lopez is a Development Associate with Refugee Services of Texas, where she makes good use of her skill with creative writing and social media. Even before she received her degree in Comparative Literature and Spanish from UMass Amherst, she taught English to young students in places as diverse as Oregon, Peru, Brazil, and Thailand. At Amherst, she was a peer counselor and advocate to women in her community, and was an advocate for women's interests at the Oregon legislature.
