Whatever! It'll be Informative and Witty!
About our speaker:
Evan Smith has been a major player in Texas journalism for decades. He is chief executive officer and editor-in-chief of the Texas Tribune—a leading reporter of events that define the politics, policy, and practices that define the Lone Star State.
For nearly 18 years, Smith was editor-in-chief of Texas Monthly. During his watch, the magazine reaped 16 National Magazine Awards (the industry’s Pulitzer Prize equivalent and was awarded the National Magazine Award for General Excellence twice. (Not too shabby for a New York native!) Since then, he succeeded in various positions with national magazines including The New Republic. He hosts a weekly interview program, Texas Monthly Talks. Today, he’s an occasional guest on TV and radio shows.
Smith is a shameless public servant, currently sitting on the board of the Austin Film Society, Trinity Episcopal School, the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, the Headliners Club, and Matinee Media. He is the founding co-chair of the Texas Film Hall of Fame. His past service takes up too much space for our purposes—but he’s done a lot. In 2005, he was named Austinite of the Year under 40 by the Young Men’s Business League and Young Women’s Business League. In 2006, he was inducted into the Medill School of Journalism Hall of Achievement.
