The Long Journey to Fix the Health System
Our current health system is broken, and it's not a fixer-upper but a tear-down. Dr. Clay Johnston came to Central Texas to change the way physicians of the future are trained as the Inaugural Dean of UT Austin's Dell Medical School. He also sought to show that for certain conditions, truly better outcomes could be achieved at lower cost.
While Dell Med made good progress, the economics of the larger health system slowed things down. Now Dr. Johnston has left academia to try to solve the problem at its source. This involves redesigning the health system so that doctors and the team working with them truly get to know the people they care for. The goal is to achieve better health outcomes for people by being more responsive to their needs, which will ultimately reduce wasteful healthcare spending. This new vision of health empowers people to know all their care options and costs and creates a partnership with medical providers that remains intact all along a person's health journey.
