Expanding Access to Healthcare in Austin
About our speaker:
Alison Alter proudly serves as Mayor Pro Tem on the Austin City Council. She has represented the central and northwest District 10 since 2017. Dr. Alter is a Harvard-trained economist and lifelong parks advocate with over 20 years of experience as an educator and small business owner.
Since taking office, Councilman Alter has focused on Austin’s long-term health and sustainability. She has championed investments in early childcare, access to medical care, workforce development, and gun violence prevention. Dr. Alter has worked to improve Austin’s sexual assault response system and reimagine Austin’s police academy. She has accelerated the city’s wildfire prevention and emergency preparedness efforts and prioritized investments in climate resilience and parks. She led development of Austin’s new Paramedic Practitioner Program and the Austin Civilian Conservation Corps.
Councilman Alter chairs the Audit and Finance Committee, serves on the Council’s Mobility, Austin Water Oversight, and Austin Energy Oversight committees and represents the City at the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO), the Hate Crimes Taskforce, and the Joint City, County, and School District Committee. She has been active in advocating for increased public school funding at the state level and co-founded Just Fund It Texas.
Councilman Alter lives in Central Austin with her husband, Dr. Jeremi Suri, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. They have two wonderful teenagers, Natalie and Zachary.
