Early Texas Art at Capitol Square

About our speaker:
Ali James is the Curator of the Texas Capitol and Director of Visitors Services. She earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1989 and a master's degree in historical administration and museum studies in 1991 from the University of Kansas. In addition to jobs at the Watkins Community Museum in Lawrence, Kansas, and the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka, Ali has worked for the State Preservation Board in Austin since October 1991.
Hired as a Curatorial Assistant, Ali worked with the artifact and photographic collections during the 1990s Capitol Restoration Project. She also was instrumental in development of the Capitol Visitors Center which opened to the public in 1994. Today she manages the curatorial division of the agency and is responsible for the historical collections at the Texas Capitol. In 2006 she assumed responsibility for the visitor experience at the Capitol by overseeing the Capitol Information and Tour Guide Service and the Capitol Visitors Center.
She has been a member of the Texas Association of Museums since 1991 and belongs to the Collection Managers Committee, Educators Committee (Secretary 1998-2001, Chair 2001-2003) and the Austin Museum Partnership (Vice Chair 1998; Chair 1999-2001, Treasurer 2002). She was appointed to the TAM Council in 2001 and served until March 2004. She is also a member of CASETA, the Center for the Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art, serving on the Board from 2007 to 2010 and as Chair during fiscal year 2010.
