St. John Colony, Texas: A Freedman Colony Community

Rosie Darby and Marshall Hill will profile the St. John 19th Body, including who we are, what we do, and the value and impact on the community. They will place today's work as the present moment in time, between the significance of their heritage, and the impact of the present moment on future generations. Who were the ancestors who created and evolved our existence? When and how? And most importantly, how will future generations be impacted by the past and present?

About our speakers:

Rosie Darby is a visionary, advocate, and a volunteer.  She expends time and her efforts for causes and activities within her communities of Caldwell, Bastrop, and Travis counties.

Rosie was born at her parent’s home in lower St. John Colony, a  Freemans Colony that was established between Lockhart Texas, and Bastrop Texas.  After slavery, Rosie’s ancestors pooled money together to purchase this property named St John Colony and established it as a settlement with all amenities of a built community.

Rosie is a two-time Cancer survivor with drive and a positive attitude, who continuously  seeks educational opportunities that enriches her educational portfolio, and that she feels she can use for the benefit of her community, her state, and her country.

During her tenure at a medical facility in Austin, Rosie created emerging non-profits, immersed herself in continuing community and nonprofit education, community and non-profit training events, and other community focused and nonprofit-related opportunities offered by the state, the city of Austin or other agencies such as Score, Real Places, and the Grantsmanship center.  Rosie has earned numerous certifications for her commitment and her efforts.

Rosie earned  an associate degree  from Durham’s Technical college in Computer Science and Computer Programming.  She later earned a bachelor’s degree in Community Development from St. Edwards University and an MEd from Texas State; she is a graduate of Leadership Austin and is working toward her JD.

Marshall Hill is the President of St. John 19th Body, a non-profit organization in St. John Colony,  Texas. He is a senior Deacon at his home church, St. John Regular Church in St. John Colony, Texas. He is a proud member of the Progressive Club in Lockhart, which provides scholarships for college bound high school graduates of Lockhart High School.

In addition to serving as the President of the St. John 19th Body, Marshall is currently a member of the corporate team of CRAFTCORPS Inc., a 200 person construction company with offices in Austin and Richmond VA. His role as Safety Coordinator allows him to oversee the orientation training of new employees as well as the day-to-day safety of employees’ company wide.

Marshall attended Blinn Jr. College and received an associate degree in business management. Marshall later attended Southwest Texas State University that is now Texas State University. He is a dedicated husband, a father of three successful children, and the proud grandpa of a bouncing baby grandson.
