Shining a Light on Safety: SafeHorns Campus Lighting Initiative at UT Austin

SafeHorns is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2016 with the mission of advocating for safety on and around the University of Texas at Austin campus. The organization is made up of parents, community members, and stakeholders who are dedicated to creating a safe environment for UT students.

One of SafeHorns' largest initiatives to date is their push to improve lighting within the UT Austin campus community. The organization has identified insufficient lighting as a major safety concern for students walking in the campus community at night. Poor lighting can create dark and shadowy areas that make students feel vulnerable to crime and can potentially lead to dangerous situations.

Joell serves as the President of SafeHorns, a nonprofit organization committed to promoting a safer campus community.

In addition to her role at SafeHorns, Joell McNew is also the President of Safeguard Strategy Crime Prevention Consultants, a consultancy specializing in enhancing safety practices and providing invaluable guidance to businesses, institutions, K-12 schools, charter schools, higher education institutions, and houses of worship. Her expertise primarily focuses on physical security and the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). Her extensive experience and dedication to crime prevention have positioned her as a respected authority in the field.
