Sally Hernandez, Travis County Sheriff
About the program and speaker:
Did you know that over 40% of the approximately 2300 people incarcerated in Travis County's jails have a mental health distinction of some sort? Your Travis County Jail isn't a hospital, but it is one of the largest mental health providers in the county. Sheriff Hernandez will explain how it happens, how TCSO deals with it, and the trauma informed approach the agency is using to address the issue. She will also explain how trauma informed care is becoming part of TCSO's DNA - a new way to help employees whose constant exposure to crisis and tragedy lessens their lifespan and increases the risk of major health problems according to national averages.
Sheriff Sally Hernandez has worked in Law Enforcement for over 40 years; more than 30 of which have been in Travis County. She started her career in 1981, in Llano, TX as a night dispatcher. In 1988, she moved to Austin and served as a deputy with the Precinct Three Constable’s Office. In 1992, she was hired as a Sergeant Investigator for Travis County District Attorney’s Office, and in 2005, she advanced to Chief of Investigations. In 2012, Hernandez was elected Travis County Constable Precinct Three and in 2016 was elected Sheriff. Out of 254 counties, she holds the distinction of being one of only seven women who currently hold title of Sheriff in the state of Texas. She considers it a great honor to lead an agency that employs the highest caliber of men and women the law enforcement profession has to offer.
